One reason vague predictions about UFOs or imminent alien disclosure can survive repeated disappointment is that some UFO reports remain officially unresolved. How Uncertainty Becomes Apparent Confirmation

Many readers interpret an unresolved report as saying:
“Investigators could not explain it, therefore it may be alien.”
The actual meaning is closer to:
“The available evidence is insufficient to determine what occurred.”
These are fundamentally different statements.
This misunderstanding creates an important psychological mechanism that keeps failed predictions alive. If someone predicts that governments are gradually preparing humanity for alien disclosure, every unresolved report can later be presented as another hint that “the truth is getting closer”. Because the case was never explained conclusively, it can continue to serve as apparent supporting evidence regardless of whether any new information emerges.
In this way, unresolved reports function less as positive evidence than as permanent placeholders for future interpretation.

History shows that unresolved status is often temporary rather than mysterious.

Predictions that avoid precise deadlines benefit from unresolved cases in several ways.
First, unresolved reports preserve the appearance that decisive evidence might arrive later. If no alien craft appears publicly, proponents can argue that investigators are still “working through the evidence.”
Second, unresolved cases shift attention away from failed forecasts. Instead of asking whether a predicted disclosure occurred, discussion moves to whether one particular sighting has finally been explained.
Third, unresolved reports encourage retrospective reinterpretation. A prediction that initially lacked supporting evidence can later claim that any lingering mystery was an early sign of the predicted event.
Because the reports themselves neither confirm nor refute extraterrestrial explanations, they can be repeatedly incorporated into new narratives without requiring the original prediction to pass a clear test.
What Stronger Evidence Would Need to Show
A genuinely persuasive case for extraterrestrial technology would require far more than an unexplained observation.
