Many UFO predictions fail without producing catastrophic consequences because most believers retain mechanisms for revising or abandoning mistaken expectations. Heaven’s Gate differed because its governing structure concentrated interpretive authority in a leader whose explanations could absorb contradictory evidence. Failed observations did not falsify the prophecy; they simply prompted reinterpretation.
Seen in that light, Hale–Bopp occupies an important but limited role. It provided the external occasion that activated decades of accumulated teaching about extraterrestrial salvation, bodily transcendence and departure from Earth.
