A UFO prediction is only useful for later evaluation if the evidence survives in a form that independent readers can inspect. A compact evidence package is a small, self-contained case file that preserves not only the prediction itself but also the information needed to verify exactly what was claimed, when it was published, and whether it was altered before or after the stated deadline. The goal is not to prove that a prediction is true or false in advance. Instead, it is to ensure that any later judgement rests on authentic, traceable records rather than memory, paraphrase or retrospective editing.
For research into failed UFO predictions, a well-constructed evidence package allows different investigators to reach the same factual starting point. It reduces disputes over wording, dates and provenance while making the prediction straightforward to test against the promised outcome.

If the source exists in several places, preserving more than one independent copy is preferable. A claimant’s own website may later change, while an archived copy or contemporary news report can demonstrate how the prediction originally appeared.
Creating a Structured Claim Sheet
The centrepiece of the package should be a single claim sheet that separates the prediction’s observable commitments from surrounding commentary.

Separating these fields discourages later reinterpretation. For example, a prediction promising that “a spacecraft will remain visible worldwide for three days beginning on 14 October” is materially different from one suggesting that spiritually receptive people “may notice unusual lights”. Recording the exact language prevents the stronger claim from being softened after the deadline.
Where interpretation is unavoidable, distinguish clearly between quoted text and researcher summary.
Preserve Proof of Timing and Authenticity
The value of an evidence package depends on demonstrating that the material existed before the predicted event.
Useful timing evidence includes:
- archived webpages with preserved capture dates;
- dated printed publications;
- newspaper reports quoting the prediction before the deadline;
- broadcast recordings with identifiable transmission dates;
- mailing-list archives or newsletters distributed before the event;
- digital files carrying reliable publication metadata.
When preserving online material, it is good practice to record:

- archived URL;
- capture date;
- retrieval date;

Include Integrity Checks Without Overcomplicating the File
The package should be simple enough for ordinary researchers to inspect while still providing evidence that locally stored files have not changed.
Useful integrity measures include:
- recording SHA-256 hashes for downloaded files;
- keeping original filenames;
- avoiding unnecessary editing or recompression;
- documenting any conversions, such as HTML to PDF;
- storing original files separately from annotated copies.

Each file should have descriptive names rather than generic labels such as “image1.png”. Including dates in ISO 8601 format (YYYY-MM-DD) makes chronological sorting straightforward.
A short readme can explain:

- when it was assembled;
- which files are originals;
- any known limitations, such as missing attachments or inaccessible pages.
This organisation enables another researcher to inspect the prediction quickly without reconstructing the collection process from scratch.
Common Mistakes That Weaken a Case File
Even when the underlying prediction is well documented, several avoidable errors reduce evidential value:
- preserving only screenshots while omitting the original source URL;
- quoting excerpts instead of recording the complete prediction;
- failing to preserve publication dates;
- mixing later explanations with the original prediction;
- relying on a single copy when multiple independent archives are available;
- editing files without retaining the originals;
- omitting metadata describing where and when files were obtained.
These shortcomings make later disputes harder to resolve because reviewers cannot independently verify the evidence or distinguish original material from later interpretation.
Why a Compact Package Matters
Most disputes over failed UFO predictions do not arise because the predicted event is difficult to observe. They arise because the documentary record becomes incomplete, edited or fragmented after the deadline has passed.
