Why members bought the telescope
The purchase was not symbolic. Contemporary reports indicate that two members of Heaven’s Gate bought a Meade LX200 computerised Schmidt–Cassegrain telescope for approximately US$3,645 from an astronomy shop in Oceanside, California, in late January 1997. Within about a week they returned the telescope. According to the shop manager, the members explained that they had successfully located Hale–Bopp but could not see anything accompanying it. Rather than concluding that the spacecraft claim was false, they regarded the telescope as unsuitable for their purposes and requested a refund. Religious claims about supernatural beings or another level of existence are not directly testable through a telescope.
