Introduction

The reopening of Leon Festinger’s sealed research papers has transformed a long-running debate over When Prophecy Fails (1956), the famous study of Dorothy Martin’s UFO prophecy group. What survives in the Festinger papers

These papers matter because they capture the research process before publication. Rather than relying solely on the polished narrative of When Prophecy Fails, historians can now examine contemporaneous notes describing what participants reportedly did, what the researchers believed they were observing, and how they discussed the project privately.

The surviving archive does not provide an uninterrupted record of every interaction. Researcher involvement. One of the most striking aspects of the archive concerns the degree of interaction between observers and participants. The published study generally presents the researchers as covert observers. Comparing the public and private records

The archival evidence is especially valuable because it allows direct comparison rather than speculation.

Instead of asking whether critics have plausible alternative interpretations, historians can examine whether field notes, correspondence and transcripts support the chronology presented in the published book. This shifts the debate from broad theoretical disagreement to documentary consistency.

That distinction is important. A theory may remain useful even if one famous case study proves less reliable than previously believed. Conversely, an influential publication can accurately describe some events while overstating others. The archive allows individual claims to be evaluated separately rather than accepted or rejected as a package.

What the records do not settle

Although the archive has significantly expanded the available evidence, it has not eliminated every uncertainty.
