Within Vague Forecasts
What Actually Counts as Alien Contact?
A sighting, hearing, telescope project or film can all be called 'contact' when the forecast never defines what contact must involve.

Introduction
Predictions that humanity is on the verge of “alien contact” often appear more successful than they really are because the word contact is rarely defined in advance. Instead of referring to one specific event, it can be stretched to include almost any development connected with UFOs or extraterrestrial life. A military hearing, an unexplained sighting, a new space telescope, a claimed psychic experience or a scientific search for radio signals may all be presented afterwards as evidence that contact has already begun.
This flexibility makes such forecasts unusually resistant to failure. If one expected form of contact never occurs, another can be substituted without acknowledging that the original expectation was unmet. Understanding this “contact creep” helps explain why broad UFO predictions often survive repeated disappointments while appearing to gain support from unrelated events.
What Actually Counts as Alien Contact?
The difficulty begins with the absence of an agreed definition. Scientific organisations studying extraterrestrial intelligence distinguish between very different activities—searching for signals, confirming a detection, analysing its meaning and deciding whether to respond. These are separate stages rather than interchangeable forms of contact.[seti.ac.uk]seti.ac.ukUKSRNRESEARCH | UKSRNUKSRNRESEARCH | UKSRN
In popular UFO discourse, however, the same word may be used for several fundamentally different ideas.
Six meanings commonly assigned to “contact”
1. Detection
The weakest definition is simply detecting something unusual: an unidentified aerial phenomenon, an unexplained radio signal or an astronomical anomaly. Detection means only that something has been observed. It does not establish an extraterrestrial source.
2. Communication
Some writers reserve “contact” for the exchange of information—for example, receiving a verified artificial radio message or successfully communicating with another civilisation. This is a far stronger claim than merely noticing an unexplained event. SETI research treats signal detection and communication as distinct scientific problems.[UKSRN]seti.ac.ukUKSRNRESEARCH | UKSRNUKSRNRESEARCH | UKSRN
3. Government disclosure
Others redefine contact as official acknowledgement. Under this usage, a parliamentary hearing, military report or declassified document is described as a stage of contact even if no extraterrestrial evidence has been verified. The event concerns human institutions rather than confirmed interaction with non-human intelligence.
4. Physical encounter
Traditional close-encounter narratives describe direct observation of an apparently non-human craft or beings. This is a much narrower meaning requiring an actual encounter rather than political discussion or scientific investigation.
5. Personal or spiritual experience
Some movements extend contact to dreams, meditation, telepathic communication or private experiences. These may be deeply meaningful to participants but are not equivalent to publicly verifiable physical interaction.
6. Cultural preparation
The broadest definition treats films, books, scientific discoveries, public debate or increasing interest in UFOs as evidence that humanity is gradually entering an era of contact. Under this interpretation, almost any increase in discussion becomes confirmation that the prediction was correct.
Why the Categories Are Not Interchangeable
These six meanings differ in both their evidential value and their implications.
A telescope discovering a potentially habitable exoplanet is not equivalent to receiving an artificial message. Likewise, a government hearing about unidentified aerial phenomena is not the same as demonstrating extraterrestrial technology. Scientific programmes investigating possible technosignatures explicitly distinguish between searching, detecting, verifying and responding because each stage requires different evidence and procedures.[seti.ac.uk]seti.ac.ukUKSRNRESEARCH | UKSRNUKSRNRESEARCH | UKSRN
Treating these stages as interchangeable creates a logical shortcut. Any progress anywhere within astronomy, politics or UFO culture can be presented as movement towards the same prediction, even though the developments answer very different questions.
For example:
- A new radio survey becomes “contact through science”.
- A congressional hearing becomes “political contact”.
- A popular science-fiction film becomes “psychological preparation”.
- A personal visionary experience becomes “individual contact”.
- An unresolved aerial sighting becomes “physical contact”.
Because the underlying definition keeps changing, the forecast never has to confront a single, clearly testable outcome.
How Contact Creep Preserves Failed Predictions
This expanding definition acts as a moving target.
Suppose someone predicts that “open contact will begin this year.” If no verified extraterrestrial communication occurs, the prediction might later be reinterpreted as referring to:
- increased media attention,
- new whistleblower testimony,
- publication of government documents,
- expanded SETI searches,
- renewed public discussion,
- or a claimed increase in sightings.
Each reinterpretation allows the original prediction to survive despite the absence of the event many listeners would initially have imagined.
The mechanism resembles retrospective matching: rather than specifying beforehand which observation would count, the definition is adjusted after events unfold. Research on hindsight bias shows that people commonly reinterpret earlier expectations once outcomes are known, making broad predictions appear more accurate in retrospect than they actually were.[PubMed]pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.govNot the same old hindsight bias: outcome information distorts a broad range of retrospective judgments - PubMed…
Scientific Practice Uses Narrow Definitions for Good Reason
Scientific searches for extraterrestrial intelligence deliberately avoid this ambiguity.
SETI programmes separate several questions:
- Was an unusual signal detected?
- Can it be ruled out as terrestrial interference or natural astrophysical activity?
- Can independent observatories confirm it?
- Does the evidence indicate technology?
- Should humanity respond?
Each stage requires increasingly stringent evidence before advancing to the next. A candidate signal is not automatically treated as confirmed communication, and confirmed communication would still differ from sustained dialogue or physical visitation.[berkeley.edu]setiathome.berkeley.eduSETI@home Scientific NewsletterSETI@homeScientific Newsletter - December 15, 2002December 15, 2002…
Similarly, recent international post-detection guidance emphasises independent verification, open data and careful communication precisely because premature claims can spread faster than evidence.[Space]space.comThis committee is writing the rulebookIn response to the challenges posed by AI, deepfakes, and rampant social media misinformation, the…
Setting an Evidence Threshold Before Events Occur
One practical way to evaluate predictions about alien contact is to define success before any relevant events happen.
Useful questions include:
- What exactly counts as contact? Is it a confirmed radio signal, physical encounter, official announcement or something else?
- Who must verify it? Independent scientific teams, governments, or only the original claimant?
- What evidence is required? Testimony, imagery, recovered material or reproducible measurements?
- What would not count? Eliminating ambiguous cases prevents later reinterpretation.
- Is there a deadline? Without one, predictions can be postponed indefinitely.
The more precisely these conditions are specified in advance, the easier it becomes to distinguish genuine predictive success from later reinterpretation.
Why Contact Creep Matters
The central problem is not that extraterrestrial life is impossible or that searching for it lacks scientific value. Modern astronomy actively investigates biosignatures and technosignatures while recognising that extraordinary claims require careful verification.[NASA Science]science.nasa.govScience UAP FAQsNASA ScienceUAP FAQs - NASA Science…
Rather, the issue is that forecasts become difficult to evaluate when “contact” can mean almost anything. Once detection, communication, disclosure, cultural change, personal experience and physical encounters are all grouped under the same label, nearly every notable UFO-related development can be presented as confirmation. A prediction that continually changes its success criteria rarely reaches a point where it can clearly succeed—or clearly fail.
